Accounting Degree Rankings

The 25 Best Online Bachelor’s Degrees in Accounting

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for accountants and auditors is $63,550, with employment rates expected to grow 13% through 2022. Some accountants—those who go on to become financial managers, management analysts and executives, for example—can earn even more. Without a degree, employers may accept on-the-job experience, as well as a knowledge of accounting software like Quickbooks, but the only careers available to those without at least a bachelor’s degree in accounting will be limited to occupations like bookkeeping, clerical accounting and tax preparation.

As online education continues to grow, learners reap the benefits of being able to choose a school outside of their geographic region. This year, the Babson Survey reported that distance learning comprised nearly 75% of the growth in enrollment during 2014. Convenient and affordable, online education is ideal for working professionals needing to continue their employment while earning a degree.

In the list below, we’ve identified the best online accounting degrees for 2016. Our rankings are created through the collection and analysis of data points from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), the foremost source for data concerning higher education in the U.S.

Each of these schools is recognized by one of three prominent accrediting agencies for business and accounting programs: the AACSB, ACBSP or the IACBE. Using our own methodology to weigh factors such as a school’s reputation, graduation rate, quality of curriculum and student preference, we have identified a selection of more than 20 fully online programs, each offering an excellent online accounting degree.

Washington State University

Public NCCU

The Program

Online accounting students at WSU’s Global Campus select one of several minors to supplement their studies in accountancy. The degree places focus on business principles, strategy, tax law and auditing.

This rigorous accounting program stands apart from other online accounting degrees in that all students must become certified in business administration with a concentration in accounting prior to advancing to upper-division business and accounting courses. This is a competitive process — enrollment is limited.

This program is offered asynchronously, which means that streaming media, such as lectures or presentations, are available whenever students are. If distance learners get stuck, a Virtual Mentor is always available to help.

Students and instructors maintain regular contact in discussion groups; occasionally, groups may convene via video chat or may collaborate using live collaboration software (Google Docs, Microsoft OneDrive, etc.). Global Campus also has its own multimedia team dedicated to creating graphics, animations and even games that enrich the interactive elements of each online course.

Credit Requirements

WSU accounting majors must become certified in business administration before enrolling in upper division business and accounting classes. Students customarily complete the 30 credits required for certification alongside WSU’s University Common Requirements. Baseline coursework includes:

  • Calculus I, II or Business Calculus
  • Law and Legal Environment
  • Business Statistics
  • Managing Information Technology
  • English Composition

Once core business requirements are complete, students may move on to upper division classes. Majors are expected to complete 24 credits in 300 level accounting courses. Topics include operations management, small business policy, accounting systems and auditing and business ethics.

Admissions Requirements

  • Applicants must send official ACT or SAT score reports before the application deadline.
  • Official transcripts indicating that the student has or will have completed their high school diploma or equivalent.

Distance learners may appreciate one standout feature of this accounting degree online, the option to obtain the 150 credit hours required to sit for the Certified Public Accountant exam by attending extra Hiram College courses. Most of the coursework in this asynchronous class can be accessed without restriction, although new content is typically unlocked at the beginning of any given week and due at the end.

100% of full-time beginning undergraduates earned some form of financial aid during the 2012-13 academic year; 91% of all undergraduates received some form of scholarship during that same period.

Admissions Requirements

  • Students must submit official high school transcripts indicating that the applicant has graduated or will graduate before their first semester at Hiram.
  • All applicants must send official SAT or ACT score reports.

Testimonials

Most of my classes have an interactive component to them, where I have to give my viewpoint on a particular topic each week. Other students will comment on my thread, and I’ll comment on theirs. The result is in some ways even better than discussions in a physical classroom, because each person has a platform to express their full opinion and have people respond thoughtfully to their ideas.
